I'm not demanding everyone believe what I believe, but this misunderstanding/assumption is one of my pet peeves. It has lots of cultural baggage that isn't immediately resonant these days, but there's a lot more in there besides "here's what you should do." Now, I will be the first to admit that most of it can be hard to follow. It shows flaws, bad decisions, corruption, all sorts of things like that. There's also a LOT of recorded history, which seems shockingly accurate/honest, compared to other historical records which are often whitewashed or political in nature. There's sections about the laws of the Hebrew people (more than just the 10) and poems. The first bit (Genesis) is a written record of oral stories, which many think are somewhat metaphorical. Actually, that bit is fairly minor, overall, or at least mixed with other stuff.
